I am a big believer in ditching the practice of setting “resolutions” and instead, creating a vision of what you want your year to look like.

Did you know that most resolutions set on January 1 are broken by February 13?

I read a book recently called “Finish” by Jon Acuff and one of his theories of why it is so difficult for people to make their resolutions last longer than 45 days is because we give up after the first non-perfect day.

That means that if your resolution was to “eat better and lose weight” most people give up after their first cheat day.

Does that seem like a good way to have your best year ever?

I submit that it does not.

In addition to setting my focus word for the year, I have started creating a vision board that I can print out and put in my office to help keep in mind what I want my year to look like.

This doesn’t necessarily mean setting concrete goals, but rather images or quotes that will inspire you to live the life you envision for yourself.

For example, a few things that I want for myself out of this next year are:

  • More family time
  • Better balance between work and home
  • Investing in my marriage
  • Focus on finishing things I start
  • Feeling physically strong
  • Reading
  • Preparing and transitioning to a family of four

So I searched the internet for photos and quotes that reminded me of those desires. I used pictures of myself as well which added a more personal touch.

The end result looked like this:

This is something that I made that I can print out and I will keep on a bulletin in my home office so I can see it daily.

I also put a copy in my Powersheets Goal Setting Workbook, which is something that I highly recommend if you want to have more success in making progress on your goals.

(If you want to read more of my Powersheets reviews, you can check that out here!)

As you can see, I also added my Focus Word of the year to the bottom of my vision board. I did this as another way to tie it all together with the more mapped out goals I have.

You can choose to add a Focus Word or skip that part altogether!

Finding Photos

Don’t get discouraged at the thought of finding pretty photos to fill your vision board. You can do searches on Google and Pinterest to find great photos to add to your vision board.

And try to add a few of yourself so that your vision board is unique to you!

If you like this Vision Board format, I have made a template for you to access through a free design site called Canva!

Giving yourself a visualization of your goals makes you increasingly more likely to make them happen. So whether that is just writing them down or also making a vision board, it is going to raise your chances of having your best year.

And do remember that there is nothing special about January, so if you are finding this post later in the year, there is still time to make a great vision board and set your intentions!

I would love to see your vision boards! If you make one, share it on Instagram and tag me (@mattiegivens) so I can see what you created!
